KASSEP trains North Senatorial Zone Surveillance Supervisors, Scribes and WDC Chairmen
Kano State Surveillance for Evidence and Policy (KASSEP), a project at ACEPHAP, has conducted a training for Kano North Senatorial Zone Surveillance Supervisors, Scribes and Ward Development (WDC) Chairmen. The session took place on August 28th, 2025, at the premises of ACEPHAP, bringing together participants from the different local government areas in the North Senatorial Zone of the state.
Representing Prof. Hadiza Shehu Galadanci, the Director of ACEPHAP, Dr. Iman Haruna Usman appreciated the participants for attending the session despite their busy schedules and locations. She reiterated the project's effort in ensuring that the right data is captured to enable proper policymaking and implementation, which will reduce maternal mortality in the state.
Dr. Fatima Muhammad, the project manager of KASSEP, started the session with an overview of the project from May 2024 to March 2025. She explained how the project has gained access to a wide array of data on maternal and child mortality in the state. She highlighted how the phase of the project has unveiled many advantages that can be leveraged subsequently and the lessons learnt. She then charged the participants to focus on the accuracy of data as well as timely reportage.
The lead data manager of the project, Abdulrahman Ibrahim, took the first session titled ‘Understanding the KASSEP Surveillance System’. With the use of a flow chart specifically designed for the project's data collection, he explained the importance of each step in the process of data collection and how it contributes to the overall data. He, however, noted that the issue of duplication of data stagnates the process and encouraged them to clean their data before any submissions.
Subsequently, Sadiq Isah and Shamsuddeen took turns to deliver two sessions: ‘Role and Responsibilities of WDCs, Scribes and Supervisors’ and ‘Data Tools, Quality Checks and Escalation Process’. While Sadiq took the participants through the major roles they play in the collation of accurate data, Shamsuddeen demonstrated the use of the data tools and how to check and validate data at local levels.
The supervisors were nominated by the KASSEP stakeholders from the Ministry of Health, Kano Sate Primary Health Care Management Board, Kano Bureau of Statistics, National Population Commission Committee and the Ward Development Committee.
Other stakeholders who were present at the session include Ado Jibrin Sanda, Ward Development Committee (WDC) Coordinator, and Dr. Sha’awa M. Said and Dr. Dayyabu Muhammad, the representatives from Kano Emirate Committee on Health. The session wrapped up with community engagement and networking among the participants to ensure communication and teamwork that will facilitate the process.
