KASSEP trains Research Assistants and State Data Surveillance Supervisors ahead of Kano State Maternal and Child Nutrition Survey

Sample Registration System (SRS) is one of the most reliable real-time data tools innovated by KASSEP established to generate reliable, community-based mortality and population data so that public policies, interventions and decision making on maternal health are done using accurate data. Following the successful phase of the KASSEP project 1, the team has updated a nutrition component on the SRS to generate more data that will improve the status of children and women’s health in Kano State.

From 17th to 19th December 2025, research assistants and state data surveillance supervisors ahead of Kano State Maternal and Child Nutrition Survey were intensively trained on the importance of nutrition on the system and were updated on the protocols needed for data collection on the nutrition in households during the survey.

Speaking during the training, Prof. Taiwo Amole, deputy director research and Prof. Baba Maiyaki, deputy director monitoring and evaluation at the center explained that Updating the KASSEP SRS is essential to keep the system reliable, current, and policy relevant ensuring that Kano State continues to benefit from accurate, actionable population health data. They encouraged the participants to implement the data collection protocols systematically so as to get accurate data.

According to Dr. Fatima Muhammad, the project manager of KASSEP at ACEPHAP, Communities are dynamic, with births, deaths, and migrations occurring regularly, making continuous change a natural reality. Regular updating is therefore essential to maintain the accuracy, relevance, and completeness of KASSEP data. By doing so, the system is able to reflect current realities and provide reliable information, rather than relying on outdated or incomplete records.

The research assistants participated in trainings around Anthropometric Assessments for Children, BMI measurements for women among others. They also took part in the practical pilot session of data collection on 18th December 2025 as they prepare for data collection next week.
